Our air fried mozzarella slices are a healthy alternative to mozzarella slices fried in oil. These breaded mozzarella slices are dipped in eggs and panko bread crumbs, then fried crisp on the outside, with an inside that’s the perfect amount of ooey gooey melted mozzarella. No need to order from a restaurant when you can make air fried mozzarella medallions in your own kitchen, in less time than it takes to wait for the delivery guy!
Around here, we’re fans of all things mozzarella! Especially when it’s melted and gooey, and dipped in something yummy! If you’re like us and can’t get enough, try our Air Fryer Pizza, Air Fryer Pizza Rolls, and these Wonton Mozzarella Sticks made in the Air Fryer.
What are Fried Mozzarella Slices?
Fried Mozzarella Slices are a common appetizer or snack, often served in restaurants or out of food trucks. Similar to a mozzarella stick, they’re made with a core of mozzarella cheese that’s coated in breading and spices. Then, they’re cooked until the outside is crispy and the inside is full of melted mozzarella. However, instead of being in the shape of a stick (or tube), they’re flat circles that look like medallions and are made from a fresh mozzarella log that’s been sliced.
What Can I Dip My Mozzarella Slices In?
There are so many great options! Just about every sauce tastes yummy with melted mozzarella, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Here are a few we’ve tried, and liked:
- Marinara – the classic!
- Pizza sauce – probably our favorite!
- BBQ sauce
- Ranch dressing
- Blue cheese dressing
- Spicy ranch
- Salsa
- Garlic butter
- Sour cream with pesto
- Honey mustard
The possibilities are endless. Just open up your fridge and see what you’ve got! You might find a new favorite.
Are These Air Fried Mozzarella Medallions Healthy?
Healthy is subjective, and everyone has their own dietary needs and concerns, so you need to evaluate that for yourself. However, the air fried version of mozzarella medallions are technically ‘healthier’ than the traditional deep-fried version.
Because these aren’t getting saturated in oil, they have less fat and fewer calories. Plus, they taste every bit as delicious! In my opinion, they’re even better, because they don’t have that deep-fried breading taste that coats your mouth in oil.

How to Make Air Fryer Mozzarella Slices
STEP ONE: Prep the mozzarella. Slice your log into 1/2 inch slices. Place the mozzarella slices onto paper towels to remove some moisture.
STEP TWO: Blend the coating. In a mixing bowl combine the panko, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Place the whisked eggs into another mixing bowl.
STEP THREE: Coat the mozzarella. Dip each mozzarella slice into the egg wash, then place it into the panko mixture, gently pressing to coat all sides. Place the coated mozzarella onto the air fryer tray, making sure they don’t touch. Repeat until all the cheese is coated.
STEP FOUR: Air Fry. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F. Bake for 5 minutes, flip then cook for an additional 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Air fry in batches if needed.
Tips and Recipe Notes
- Make sure you line the basket with parchment. If you don’t have parchment, use a generous amount of cooking spray. If your mozzarella medallions stick to the basket, you’ll have a big mess on your hands!
- You can buy a mozzarella log and slice it yourself, or, you can look for a pre-sliced mozzarella log, usually right beside the whole ones. Pre-sliced will make this recipe even easier, plus, all your mozzarella medallions will be uniform in size.
- If you’re cooking in batches, keep your mozzarella medallions warm by placing them on a small plate with a piece of foil over them. you can always toss them back in the air fryer for 30 seconds to 1 minute to reheat.
- Watch these carefully, and if they look like they’re starting to bubble or drip, they’re probably ready to come out.
FAQs
Every air fryer is different, so you may have to adjust your temperature or cooking time to help avoid a cheese explosion. One thing that can help is to partially freeze your mozzarella slices before breading them. When they go in the air fryer, they’ll still be cold, and that can help reduce the likelihood they’ll burst.
Mozzarella is a popular option for a snack food when you’re following a keto diet, but what about the breading? You can substititue 2 parts almond flour to 1 part grated (powdered) parmesan in this recipe for the bread crumbs. Season as you’d like!
You likely don’t have enough breading on your mozzarella. You can try to press down more into the breading, or you can try a double breading technique where you dip in the egg, then breadcrumbs, then the egg again, and finally, the bread crumbs again.
